Chlamydia, or genital warts as it’s more popularly called, is the most regular of the sexually transmitted diseases (STD). It is a bacterial infection caused by the pathogen Chlamydia trachomatis, and is particularly prevalent in the under 25 demographic. An estimated 3 million or more men and women in the U.S. fall prey to Chlamydia every year. The number is even higher for those affected globally.

Muted Signs
Chlamydia is notoriously insidious. It is often referred to as the “silent infection” since those stricken fail to develop any noticeable signs of illness.

In fact 50% of all men and 75% of women betray no symptoms. Although, when visible both men and women present differing signs of infection.

Possible Red Flags
The Chlamydia bacterium influences men another way than it does to women. In men, the infection spreads through the urethra, the tube connecting the bladder to the penis. Somehow though men are more likely to spot Chlamydia in its early stages, since it causes:

• An odd discharge to flow from the penis. This secreted matter is often cloudy, watery, unusually colored, and/or foul-smelling.
• A burning sensation upon urinating. This is the most prominent, and oft-reported sign of Chlamydia. Patients may also experience a need to urinate with greater frequency.
• Swelling and soreness of the testicles. This usually occurs in the intermediate-advanced stages of the infection.
• An inflammation of the penis. The infection develops in the urethra, the tube traveling through the penis, and can thus cause significant irritation in and around the opening of the penis.
• Swelling of rectum. This is common for both men and women and is indicative of anal Chlamydia.
• Sore throat. This can develop as a result of oral Chlamydia contracted through oral sex.

Vigilance is Key
Chlamydia symptoms usually take 2-3 weeks on average to first manifest them self. However, as mentioned, ½ of all infected males fail to develop any warning signs at all whereby necessitating need for annual physical checkups – especially for those individuals who entertain multiple sexual partners. Multiple would often mean more than 1.  If not handled on time, Chlamydia in men can show the way to infertility, and permanent joint trouble. It is important to understand that Chlamydia symptoms will first show at point of contact since the infection can transmitted through any sexual act; oral, anal, or vaginal.
